Neil Forester Receives Pro Bono Award from Placer County Bar Association

We are pleased to share the news that Neil Forester has received the annual Pro Bono Award from the Placer County Bar Association (“PCBA”). He was honored at the Annual Dinner & Installation of Officers and Board of Directors on January 17, 2019, in Roseville. In addition, FPS attorney Kristen Sellers took her “oath of office” to serve on the PCBA board in the member-at-large role. In receiving the recognition, Neil encouraged the attorneys in the room to give back:

It’s the work that I do with WEAVE, and that I do with NorCal Boxer Rescue, and that we do for the pro bono individual clients … it’s that work that keeps me going. So I encourage you all to commit yourselves to doing more pro bono work in the community and more to help the people that need it the most … the people that don’t have access to the legal resources that they need to survive.

Our congratulations extend to the additional award recipients:

  • James Lazar, Career Achievement Award
  • Hon. Alan Pineschi, Community Service Award
  • Hon. Eugine Gini, Jr., Family Law Service to Community Award
  • Terry Gilbeau, Tim Coffin Scholarship Essay Recipient

The PCBA Pro Bono Award recognizes Neil’s contributions to WEAVE, the primary provider of crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Sacramento County. Neil started volunteering for WEAVE in 2006 by joining the committee overseeing construction of a new safe house. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2011 and in 2019 is the Immediate Past President after serving a two-year term as Board Chair.

Most notably, Neil was one of the chief architects of WEAVE Legal, the redesigned legal services program which ensures victims have access to free and discounted legal assistance. In 2014, his work on the project was recognized by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors with a Hero of Human Service Award. Since it launched in 2013, WEAVE Legal has helped more than 27,000 survivors. Neil continues to provide supervision and consultation to WEAVE staff attorneys on their DV cases and periodically teaches the program’s free legal workshops on the divorce process.

This past October, Neil was honored to give a toast at WEAVE’s 40th Anniversary Gala, a disco-themed dinner celebration with silent and live auction fundraising.

Beyond the legal work, Neil, members of his firm, and their families help WEAVE with fundraising efforts throughout the year, including Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the light-hearted men’s march to help raise awareness about serious issues surrounding sexual violence. The FPS team rallies around events benefitting Sharing Parents of Sacramento, Habitat for Humanity, Families for Early Autism Treatment, and NorCal Boxer Rescue, among others.

FPS also gives back to the local legal community, through volunteer court positions, law school alumni mentor programs, adjunct teaching, legislation advocacy, and CLE presentations.
